Tile Type Image Characteristics Application
Ceramic Ceramic Tile Machine-made of clay, pressed in a die and fired in kiln. The glaze, a mixture of ground glass and metal oxides, adds color and a hard surface. General use - floors, walls, countertops. One of the most practical material nowadays. Practical choice
Porcelain Porcelain tile Porcelain clay is a variation of ceramic tile. It is fired at higher temperature and produces a finer, harder tile. High traffic areas. Can be used in constantly wet and exterior freezing conditions. Sealing is not required.

Marble tile Crystalline variety of limestone consisting of calcite. Durable material in a dry atmosphere and low-medium traffic. Used for statuary and building purposes. High end aesthetic option for flooring, walls, tabletops, vanity tops etc.
Green Green - verde tile echnically, not a marble. It is serpentine, which has magnesium silicate, not calcium silicate (like marble). It is not acid sensitive and scratch resistant. Common choice for floors, walls, kitchen counters and backsplashes.
Marble Black Marble Black - nero tile Named also as Nero Marquina, this is a very soft limestone often mistaken as a marble. Not recommended for interior flooring but good as a decor material with little use and no abuse. Easily stained and scratched.

Agglomerate tile Pieces of marble are mixed together with resins to form a block slab, which is then cut and finished. Practical choice for floors, walls and general installation. Has similar features as marble but less expensive.
Granite Granite tile Very dense, hard and brittle mineral. Resistant to most chemicals except oil. Composed of quartz and feldspar. Used in high stress situations. Stands well against heavy foot traffic, making it preferable for commercial lobbies, pavements and walkways.
Slate Slate tile Dense but soft and easily scratched material with low porosity. Good indoors. Surface is uneven and cleft planes can spall due to cleaving of the stone along layers. Must be sealed to prevent staining and soiling.
Quarry Tile Quarry tile Clay, extruded through a die, cut to size and fired in kiln. Usually deep red in color and left unglazed. Low-cost, beautiful solution and ideal for flooring., Can be used outdoors, even in freeze-thaw areas. Practical choice.
Terra-Cotta Terra-cotta tile Made of unrefined natural clay fired at very low temperatures. Because they require little equipment or energy to produce, most is produced in Mexico. Not expensive and rustic hand-made charm. Low density and high water absorption dictate frequent sealing.
Mosaic Mosaic tile Made from different types of clay with color pigments added so the color goes all the way through the tile. Suitable for almost any surface because they are hard, resist moisture and stain-proof.
Glass Glass tile Multi-colored and some are iridescent. Impervious to moisture. May be smooth or rough. May be hand painted. Indoors and outdoors for decor purposes on floors, walls, swimming pools, fountains etc.
Art Tile Art tile Hand crafted individually made of any of the above material. Used for artistic and decoration purposes which is determined by type of material and glazing techniques.
